Drone footage of Postman in Santa Rosa

Post by Furball » Thu Oct 12, 2017 3:25 pm

The United States Postal Service has closed multiple post offices in Sonoma County, but at least one postal service worker continued to deliver mail to a destroyed Santa Rosa neighborhood.

Footage captured by the licensed professional drone operator and photographer Douglas Thron, reportedly before the FAA issued a no-fly restriction in the area, shows a few residential blocks completely decimated by the Tubbs fire. The extent of the damage was shocking, even to Thron, who says he's covered multiple wildfires and floods during his career.

"It looked like a bomb went off, or someone flew over and bombed the whole area," he told SFGATE. "It looked like a war zone. [The fires] burned everything down to the ground."

Seeing the postman driving along just added to the surreal nature of the scene.
"I did a double take," Thron says, likening the experience to the absurdity of seeing a rhinoceros running through San Francisco. "I watched him go to a half dozen mailboxes ... It was like I was seeing something he wasn't seeing."

The USPS claims that this USPS worker was fulfilling requests from some residents to continue delivering mail to standing mailboxes.

Thron, whose work has been seen on "Good Morning America" and elsewhere on television, says his goal in posting the video to YouTube was to convey that this is an event much larger than people may think. "This isn't just a little wildfire burning through the brush; its a horrendous fire," he says. "It's still hard to comprehend the magnitude of these fires. It leaves me speechless."

WTF you delivering mail for.......our local post offices are holding the mail for those areas so you can go pick it up when you can.

Not sure if you guys know this but the Redwood Lake Complex fire was in the neighboring town and I knew a lot of people who were affected by it, lost their homes, animals. I had to work the EOC answering phones the 2nd day and that was awful and heart wrenching....

I knew the lady who's 14 yr old son died and the rest of the family has 3rd degree burns on 60% of their bodies.......That was the worst and I cannot fathom what they are going through.....

The smoke in the air was almost unbearable and worst thing was that if the wind shifted and kept blowing @ the freakish 60mph it totally could have came along the mountain to our house which is at the base of it.

It is so extremely sad to hear of all the animals that had to fend for themselves. One in particular that makes me sick to my stomach is the lady who lost 12 Bernese Mountain Dogs and 2 dashounds-4 of those were 4 week old puppies. Not only that but she let her homeowners insurance lapse because she couldn't afford it-she has absolutely NOTHING LEFT. I'm sorry but I COULD NOT leave my animals..even if it probably meant my life. Because they are my life and I don't think I could ever forgive myself if I caused their deaths.

The speed of the fire that raced into the area was unbelievable, and people literally had minutes to get the hell out. Some areas were 1 way in and out, others at least had the dirt mtn pass to get out. Some of the areas where it started are pretty rural and it happened at around 1 am so if you were dead sleeping and no cell phone service or a fairly close neighbor who came to notify you, that's it for you.

This was quite a reality check as to what can happen in an instant.......

Jesus BuRny, that's tough stuff. Answering phones during that must have been pretty epic, but knowing your heart I'm sure you where of great benefit to those who called. I saw an article about the animal shelters overflowing, all those dogs/cats looked pretty sad/scared, I hope they can get fostered until their people find them. Glad you and your house are ok.
