Wife got rear-ended this morning. She's okay I think, had a little sore neck but it went away. We'll see how the next 48 hours go. Dog was in the car and was pretty traumatized, wouldn't get out of her lap after the crash.
To set the scene, leaving out of our neighborhood is long straight fast sections (55-65mph) of two lane road. Mary was at the end of a two mile straight flat stretch thet ends at a stop sign at a T intersection. Mary was almost stopped behind a line of about 5 or 6 cars and POW! The girl that plowed into Mary was taking her kid to school and they were late (it was a little after 8am) and she must have been texting or something because how else do you fuck up this intersection? Did I mension her license is expired? Luckily she had insurance! Mary called me right away because the girl was like 'omg omg dont call the cops', and so I told her 'dont worry I'll be right there' and I called 911. The Sheriff was not pleased with the girl, and was very helpful with Mary (at least after I zoomed up in my bucket truck, pissed off and obviously worried about the wife). We left before the cop and her did, I think he was going to tow her explorer or make her get a friend to come drive that pos home, because I don't think he was going to let her drive it away.
So the Rabbit is in the shop and we have a rental car and her insurance (state farm) is paying for it all. The body shop guy drove Mary to the airport to get her rental, whcih is a big Subaru 4-door sedan and is really nice. The Rabbit is 9 years old now, so that Subaru is tempting us pretty hard.

Re: Pow
Yeah, no neck problems today, so looks like she got through it unscathed. Very thankful.

Re: Pow
They totalled it. Didn't look totalled to me.
So after looking at Hondas,Toyotas, Subarus, Kias, and Fords, etc, we ended up buying another one.
It's just a great car, and it suits us. We like the 4 doors, and the sunroof is nice too.
What a hassle this has been, but I guess it's cool to have a new car.

Wow, I missed this post! That could have been worse, glad she's OK. I get girls in here at work just like that one all the time. "Ma'am, your DL is expired, and you need someone else here to drive your car off the lot". Then she has some BS story about how it really isn't expired, lol. I see the new one is a 5 door- nice.

Re: Pow
We were going to buy another 2-door, but learned they stopped making the 2-door version several years ago.
The back doors are actually super-handy, and don't look bad, so it's all good.
The Rabbit had a 2.5L motor that had 170hp and about 24mpg, this Golf has a 1.8L turbo that has 170hp and has averaged 29mpg so far.
The golf feels much faster though, and it handles way better.
A couple cool features are the rear camera that displays on the dash when in reverse, the blind spot warnings on the side mirrors, and the seats are really comfy.
For now I give all the buttons on the steering wheel a minus. Full controls for radio, cruise control, and phone calls just seems a bit much.
The infotainment system is kinda cool, but can be quite distracting.
Need to either come to grips with all the menus/info, or just leave it alone and drive the car.
It has Sirius radio free for 3 months, need to look around for some good channels.
I like being able to mirror the phone's navigation onto the big screen on the dash.

Re: Pow
I have all those buttons on my 3 hatchback wheel, and by now I know all buttons by feel, even though they're lighted. I activated the on-board nav later and never looked back. In the mountains here, cell connection is spotty, but sat nav always works, and also doesn't heat up the phone battery. But being able to mirror the phone nav is nice!

Re: Pow
Added mud flaps and got the windows tinted.
Luckily the winter studded wheels/tires from the Rabbit also fit on the Golf, so that saved us some money.
Milage for the last full tank of gas was 39mpg combination city and highway, so that's exceeding expectations.
Two things about the glove box. One, it doesn't lock. Why?!?!
Second, there's a CD player in there. That's odd.
